Violent Video Games

mortal kombat One of the most violent video games I ever played was Mortal Kombat. I remember it wasn’t long ago that I witnessed the famous “Finish Him” scene in the arcade. I was around 15 years old and I was shock at what I was seeing but I couldn’t look away.
I stayed and watched fatality after fatality, each one a little gorier than the last. It seems as if these games highlight the negative effects of video games.

Mortal Kombat had set a new standard for violence. Today's ultra-violent video games make dying almost as much fun as living. The line up in the arcade to play this game was ridiculous. Some didn’t even play, they just watched almost as if they were in a trance.

At what point did violent video games become entertainment?

Grand Theft AutoViolent video games have become a staple in the local arcades. Some of these kids in these arcades were looked like they were barely 15 years old.  What happens to a kid that watches fatalities over and over again? Maybe it has no affect at all. In any case, games like Doom and Mortal Kombat are fantasy, something from a good science fiction story.

The only possible way that violence in video games can get worse is to have a game based more believable story line. A war, street gangs i.e. (Grand Theft Auto, or any number of war games)

The danger here is that, the more plausible the situation the more dangerous these games become. How can we know for certain the negative effects of video games on the market today. How many times do you have to play Grand Theft Auto before the action of beating up a prostitute becomes normal or God forbid boring?

Quite possibly the most violent video games ever made.

ManhuntManhunt was banned outright in several countries when it was launched and later in the UK the game was linked to an actual murder case of a 14 year old, Stefan Pakeerah by a 17 year old, Warren Leblanc.

Stefans mother claimed that Leblanc had been obsessed with Manhunt after he pleaded guilty in court and as such most vendors in the UK removed Manhunt from their stocks. Police denied any link, but it still strikes a chilling cord. Especially when you consider that Leblanc murdered his friend by stabbing him with a claw hammer, identical to an execution shown in Manhunt.

If there ever was a clear case of the negative effects of video games we are looking at it. We are raising a generation of children where extreme violence in games is the norm. What are the affects of these violent video games? What happens when a child reaches their teens and adulthood after that?

I’m eager to hear you comments about violence in video games, log on the blog and let your voice be heard!
